Abstract
Phthalic anhydride in solid form is recovered from hot gases containing phthalic anhydride vapour by introducing water droplets into the hot gases in a cyclone separator by the injection of water through a spray nozzle in the inlet of the cyclone separator, cooling the gases directly by the evaporation of water droplets thus precipitating phthalic anhydride direct which is separated from the cooled gases by the cyclone separator. To minimise the amount of water required the hot reaction gases from the phthalic anhydride manufacturing unit may be precooled by indirect contact to not below 135 DEG C., if subsequently the amount of water injected does not largely exceed the amount needed to effect condensation then saturation will be avoided and hydrolysis will not follow to any substantial extent. The coprecipitation of maleic anhydride may be avoided if the temperature of the cooled gas is kept above 80 DEG C.
