Abstract
943,693. Rotary I.C. engines. NSU MOTOR- .ENWERKE A.G., and WANKEL G.m.b.H. May 31, 1961 [June 1, 1960], No. 19630/61. Heading F1F. A rotary I.C. engine of the Wankel type is cooled by air blown through the hollow rotor. The air, which may have entrained in it lubricating oil and fuel, enters the engine by an intake 17 and is blown by a fan 15 integral with the engine flywheel 14, through a cavity 21 in the rotor 9, in which cooling fins (Fig. 2 not shown) may be provided, to an annulus 23 in the end wall 1, and thence into the working chamber through the inlet port 22. An inlet port 22<SP>1</SP> may also be provided in the other end wall, 2. When lubricant is introduced with the air supply, pockets such as 29, 30 are provided, in which the lubricant collects before passing through passages 28, 29 and 30 to lubricate bearings 4, 5 and 8. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), the cooling air passes through the rotor. and is discharged without entering the working chamber. The engine may be a diesel engine and the invention may be applied to a fluid pump, motor or compressor.
