Abstract
Sulphonated stilbene derivatives which possess optical brightening power, of general formula: <FORM:0943639/C2/1> in which R represents an alkyl group, X a residue of a primary or secondary amine, and Me represents a cation, are prepared by reacting an alkoxylated 4:6-dichlorotriazine, with 4:41-diamino-stilbene-2:21-disulphonic acid and a p. or sec. amine, and wherein the alkoxylated dichlorotriazine is obtained by reacting cyanuric chloride with a primary alcohol at 0 to 20 DEG C. in the presence of an acid-binding agent e.g. sodium carbonate or bicarbonate, the resulting alkoxylated dichlorotriazine is condensed without isolating it from the reaction mixture, in suspension in an aqueous alcohol at 35 to 40 DEG C. with 4:41-diaminostilbene-2:21-disulphonic acid, and the product is reacted with the amine at from 80 to 85 DEG C., and the medium is kept alkaline. Aniline, mono- and diethanolamine, methyl, ethyl- and propylamine, dimethyl and diethylamine, o - and p-chloraniline, or melamine may be used. The product is suitable as an optical brightener for cellulose and polyamide fibres and paper.
