943,000. Feeding tobacco. K. KÍRBER. April 4, 1960 [July 12, 1959], No. 11783/60. Heading A2C. [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for trimming or equalising a tobacco stream comprises an air permeable conveyer 2, Fig. 1 moving over a suction chamber 4, a trimming or equalising device 5a, 5b facing the suction chamber and a cover plate 6 between the suction chamber and the conveyer having a graded flow area to provide a progressively reduced suction towards the trimming device. Cut tobacco 11 supplied to a conveyer belt 9 is pressed into a peripheral duct 2a on the suction feed wheel 2 at the commencement A of the suction chamber. The bottom of the duct 2a is formed by a drumlike screen 2b, apertures through which connect the duct to a radial chamber 2c. The tobacco is subjected to a powerful suction which draws the tobacco into the duct 2a and holds it there during conveyance by the wheel 2. Due to the progressive reduction in the through way section of the plate 6 the suction progressively falls towards the point of trimming. If complete release of the tobacco is required at trimming the chamber 4 may terminate short of the trimming device (as shown) and also apertures 7 may be provided in the plate 6 which provide connection between the duct 2a via openings in the screen 2b, radial chamber 2c and ducts 8 with the atmosphere. The cover plate 6 may be provided with apertures the number and/or size of which progressively falls towards the trimming point. Alternatively a series of transversely disposed slots which are progressively smaller in width and/or more widely spaced towards the trimming point may be provided. In another embodiment Fig. 2 the cover plate consists of a wall portion dividing separate suction chambers 15 from a common main chamber 17, the wall having ports 16 leading to the chambers 15 which become progressively smaller towards the trimming device. At least the cross-section of one of the ports 16 is adjustable by means of a needle valve 19. The tobacco is carried by an endless perforated conveyer belt 14 and is confined laterally by two endless belts 13. Specification 940,155 is referred to.
