Abstract
Sulphonic acids are obtained from hydrocarbons by contacting a feedstock consisting substantially of straight chain- or cycloparaffins with a mixture of sulphur dioxide and oxygen (or air) in the presence of high energy radiation in an amount so as to allow the reaction to become self-sustaining, after which the supply of radiation is discontinued, and the reaction is continued or restarted by the introduction into the reaction mixture of further hydrocarbon feedstock, sulphur dioxide and oxygen. After the termination of irradiation, the further hydrocarbon feedstock added may contain olefins and aromatic hydrocarbons but, preferably, such feedstocks are added in increments of not more than 10% by weight of the reacting mass. The reaction is further improved if the sulphonic acid product is removed during the addition of fresh feed. In a modification, a reaction mixture, which has been rendered dormant by the cessation of irradiation, may be transferred to another vessel and the reaction started up again by supplying fresh hydrocarbon feed and sulphonation gases. Further, a reaction which has terminated due to the cessation of the supply of one or both of the reacting gases, after termination of the high-energy radiation, may be revived by fresh supplies of the gas or gases with hydrocarbon feedstock. The high energy radiation used in initiating the reaction preferably has an energy of over 30 electron volts and can be obtained from x-ray and beta ray machines, waste materials from nuclear reactors, neutron reactors and artificially produced isotopes such as cobalt 60. The sulphonic acid products may be converted to sulphonates by reaction with basic compounds such as sodium carbonate, calcium oxide and hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, and barium oxide and hydroxide. In the examples, the initial hydrocarbon feedstock is n-hexane, the additional feedstock, after termination of irradiation, being selected from n-cetane, n-hexane, acid treated kerosene, and a 2% solution of 2,3-dimethyl-butane in n-hexane. Specification 912,903 is referred to.
