Abstract

942,205. Percussive tools. RUBBERMAID The. April 7,1960 [April 16,1959], No. 12430/60. Heading B4C. A rotary percussive tool comprises a rotor mounted within a housing, a hammer movable axially of the rotor towards and away from an anvil, resilient means urging the hammer towards the anvil, and co-operating cam and cam follower, one mounted on the hammer and the other in the housing, the latter being retractable from a position producing reciprocation and rotation of the hammer to a position allowing rotation only. As shown, a motor casing 10 is connected to a housing 15, the motor 11 driving a drill rotor 17 threaded into a chuck 18. A hammer 45 surrounds a reduced diameter portion 19 of the rotor 17, a pair of flats 46 on the shaft engaging complementary flats on the hammer in such manner that the hammer rotates with the shaft but may reciprocate thereon. A spring 49 urges the hammer towards an anvil 48. A cam groove 55 on the hammer is engaged by a cam follower roller 60 mounted on the housing, the cam being of such shape that the hammer is moved against the spring pressure and then released suddenly to produce a blow on the anvil. The cam follower may be retracted out of the groove by rotation of a knob 67 which moves the cam follower against a spring 69. The tool steel 30 is retained in the chuck by frusto-conical portions 30 and dowels 32 acting on flats on the end of the steel.
