Abstract
The invention comprises organo - polyphosphine-boranes having the general formula H3B.RPH-Y-PHR1.BH3 in which R and R1 are unsubstituted or substituted hydrocarbon groups or together form a divalent unsubstituted or substituted hydrocarbon group and Y is a hydrocarbon group or fluorinated hydrocarbon group, each phosphorus atom being attached to a terminal carbon atom or an aromatic nucleus of the group Y. The nonel compounds may be made by treating a polyphosphine of formula RPH-Y-PHR1 with a source of BH3 radicals, such as diborane, acidified alkali metal borohydrides, non-ionic metal borohydrides such as aluminium borohydride, and complexes of the radical BH3 with ethers or amines. When diborane is used the reaction takes place at room temperature or as low as-78 DEG C. in a liquid inert to the reactants and products, e.g. an ether or a hydrocarbon.
