Abstract

940,846. Knitting machines. DRAPER CORPORATION. July 4,1961 [July 18, 1960], No. 24082/61. Heading D1C. In knitting tubular fabric on a circular knitting machine, the body yarn is drawn, by means of a flopper cam 40, behind the nibs 39 of sinkers which cast off previously formed needle loops and cause the newly drawn sinker loops to pass from the back to the throat of the sinkers, the fabric being fashioned by progressively decreasing the stitch length and withdrawing outwardly the casting off point of the sinkers. As shown, in a machine with fixed needle cams, the cylinder 22 is vertically movable by cam controlled means acting on the cylinder support 23. The sinker cap 26 is urged downwardly to hold the cylinder in contact with the support 23 whose downward movement is limited by an adjustable stop member 37. Before the body yarn is drawn behind the sinker nibs 39, a cam 41 withdraws the sinkers to cause newly formed loops to pass from the backs into the throats thereof. Cam 40 and a casting off cam 42 underlying it are pivoted to the sinker cap and are both spring-biased outwardly. Ears 48, 49 on cams 40, 42 carry pins 50, 51 engaged by slidable rods 53, 58 actuated by Bowden cables operated by bell crank levers 57, 61 operated by a pattern disc 69. A main pattern drum 62 is moved periodically by a pawl 63 and ratchet 64 controlled by pattern chain 65 which is ratcheted continuously in the same direction by pawl 66 and ratchet 67. An independent auxiliary pattern drum 68 coaxial with drum 62 made up of pattern discs 69 with frangible butts is moved by a ratchet 73 and pawl 74. Pawls 74 and 66 are carried on the arms 76 and 78 of a continuously oscillated bell crank lever. Pawl 74 is inactivated through a linkage when lugs 88 are absent from the pattern chain and, when active, may be effective over only part of its stroke as controlled through a linkage operated by one of the discs 69. Pawl 66 acts during the withdrawal stroke of pawls 63, 74, the latter being operated simultaneously unless one or both is wholly or partly inactivated. One arm 100 of a bell crank lever engages a vertically adjustable sleeve member 101 and the other arm 104 engages the end of an adjustable member 105 fixed to an end of cable 60. Thus as cylinder support 23 moves intermittently downwardly cam 42 will be withdrawn outwardly of the cylinder. Specifications 586, 770, 600, 921 and U.S.A. Specifications 2, 217, 022, 2, 422, 568, 2, 827, 780 and 2, 927, 447 are referred to.
