Abstract

940,459. Ammunition fuzes. JUNGHANS A.G. GEB. Feb. 13, 1961 [Feb. 11, 1960 (2); June 21, 1960], No. 5312/61. Heading F3A. percussion fuze for unrotated projectiles, which can be set for delayed or instantaneous action as in Specification 905,963 by adjusting a screw 13, is provided with additional safety means for securing the striker 16. As in Fig. 6 of the prior Specification, an annular disc 28 surrounding the striker head 24 forms an abutment for a flange 26 to limit the forward movement of the striker by spring 30. During transport, the firing-pin 25 engages a blind bore in the rotor 14 as in the prior Specification. To prevent the striker 16 moving to the armed position and so withdrawing the pin 25, a resilient latch of sheet steel engages in a groove 33 by means of arms 34, 35, Fig. 2. The latch, fixed at one end to the clockwork, is bent at the other end around the locking bolt 21. A transparent cap 41, closing the nose of the fuze, may be replaced by a transparent diaphragm. Through this closure, it is possible to see whether the fuze has become armed accidentally, e.g. by fracture of the latch 32. To render this easily ascertainable, the striker assembly may be as in Fig. 6, where the firing pin 25 is inserted in a tapered body 44 of red synthetic plastic. The body 44 terminates in a cup 46 of stepped diameter closed by a striker head 47 of white plastics. If the fuze is armed, the head of the striker is pushed outwards by the spring 30 and the red part of the head is visible through the window 41. To prevent premature ignition, a spring 50 is placed in the cup 46 with its two ends bent into eyelets extending through the cup into frictional engagement with the wall of the fuze bore 29. When the striker is thrust forward by spring 30, spring 50 expands and the eyelets (52, 51) come to rest against a shoulder 49 and so prevent return of the striker until the spring 50 is deformed on impact. The cover-plate 23 of the timing mechanism may have a resilient arm 56, which secures the inertia bolt 21.
