Abstract

940,261. Work-holders. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Nov. 11, 1959 [Nov. 24, 1958], No. 37726/58. Heading B3B. A work-holder on which a cylinder &c. is rotated during a welding or like operation comprises a number of rollers, at least one of which is powerdriven, and at least one of which is skewed relative to the others to counteract axial movement of the cylinder. The cylinder 1, Fig. 1, is supported on four rubber-tyred rollers 2 mounted on bases 3, the distance apart of the bases being adjustable, and the bases being mounted on wheels for axial-movement of cylinder 1. One of the bases carries a member 4 with a roller thereon, the axis of which is adjustable relative to the axes of the other rollers, or the member 4 may carry two rollers. In a modification, the roller 6, Fig. 3, is secured to a frame 7 which pivots on a base 9 at 8, and is clamped in the adjusted position by screws 10. In a further modification, the roller 13, Fig. 4, is pivoted in a frame 16 at 14, and locked in the adjusted position by screws in a bracket 18<SP>1</SP> on the frame, which engage a lug 18 on the pivot bracket 14<SP>1</SP>. A roller may be inclined automatically in response to axial movement of the cylinder by a lever system which is connected to each end of the cylinder and to a base carrying the roller, whereby the base is pivoted when the lever system is actuated. Two rollers 33 may be mounted on a frame 32, Fig. 7, secured at each end to resilient mountings 35, comprising plates 36 bonded together by rubber strips 37, the mountings being secured to a plate 38, the latter being secured to a base 34 by a bolt 42 engaging a slot 43. In operation, if the cylinder supported by the rollers 33 and at least one other pair of rollers, moves axially during rotation, the plates 36 on the mountings 35 slide over each other, and the rollers 33 are skewed. The plates of the mountings may then be aligned by moving the plate 38 by a screwed-rod 40 and nuts 39, their positions being indicated by markings 44. Specification 701,411 is referred to.
