Abstract

939,967. Furniture frames; upholstery. W. S. NUGENT. Dec. 29, 1960 [Jan. 11, 1960], No. 44672/60. Classes 52 (2) and 52 (4). In a furniture piece a body supporting formation 12 consists of an endless resilient frame 25 having spaced-apart side portions 26, 27 which engage support means 34 on a base 11 in such a manner that the frame 25 is under tension, the frame 25 being covered by non-extensible body supporting means such as canvas sleeves 41, 42 which become taut when the resilient frame 25 is attached to the base 11, substantial extents of the side portions 26, 27 of the frame 25 being free to move inwardly under the application of a force to the body support means 41, 42. The frame 25 has a back section 31 (Fig. 6) which is connected to a seat portion 30 by reversely bent portions 32, 33. Rubber or plastic foam sections 43, 44, 47 extend over the sleeves 41, 42 and secured to the frame 25 by adhesive tape 46, 48. A sheath 51 of plastic or heavy woven upholstery material is provided to cover the frame 25, the sleeves 41, 42 and the foam sections (Fig. 5).
