939,900. Grinding. E. RID, and F. AUGSBERGER, [trading as MASCHINENFABRIK K. WALTER]. Sept. 13, 1962 [Sept. 14, 1961], No. 34952/62. Class 60. The surface of a rotating cylinder e.g. a copper-surfaced intaglio cylinder 10 is polished by a rotating polishing head 1 moving along the surface of the cylinder, the head being free to rotate on an axis 5 which is slightly inclined to a plane normal to the cylinder axis 4 so that the head 1 is driven by the contact between the head and cylinder, the centre 7 of the contact area being located to one side of the polishing head axis 5. The pressure of the head 1 on the cylinder may be varied to change the position at which the head begins to contact the cylindrical surface. The inclination of the axis 4 of the head 1 may be varied and it may be laterally off-set, as shown in Fig. 3, from a plane containing the axis 5 of the cylinder 10. In place of the circular head shown in Figs. 1 and 3 a rectangular head, Fig. 4, may be used. An abrasive sheet 11 is stretched over a felt pad 12 by an adjusting screw 20<SP>1</SP> which is moved outwardly of the frame member 14, the opposite edges of the sheet 11 being gripped by clamping members 17, 18, and 17<SP>1</SP>, 18<SP>1</SP>, the head 27 of a screw 21 limits this outward movement.
