2 Claims. (01. 51-187) This invention relates to hand sanders, the primary object of the invention being to provide a hand sander having means whereby the abrasive strip used therewith, may be readily and easily secured to the body portion of the device, where it will be held in such a way as to present a flat sanding surface, during the sanding operation.
An important object of the invention is to provide a hand sander having a cushioning surface against which the sanding strip rests during the sanding, thereby reducing wear on the sanding strip to the minimum, and at the same time provide a sander which will adapt itself to irregularities in the sanded surface and prevent the sanding strip from digging into the sanded surface, should uneven pressurebe directed to the sander.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a sander constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through the sander.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the device comprises a body portion 5 which may be of any desired size, that is to say if the device is to be operated with one hand, the length of the body portion will be about siX inches, but if the device is to be used with both hands as a plane, it may be desirable to construct the body portion of greater length.
As shown, the lower surface of the body portion is slightly curved from the center thereof, to the ends of the body portion. Secured to this curved surface, is a cushioning member 6 which may be constructed of rubber, felt or other suitable material. This cushioning member provides a supporting surface for the sanding strip which is indicated by the reference character 1, the sanding strip being of a length so that it completely covers the cushioning member 6.
At one end of the body portion 5, is a slot into which one end of the sanding strip 1 is positioned, the slot being indicated by the reference character 8, and is so disposed that the end of the sanding strip positioned therein will be extended downwardly towards the bottom of the body portion 5.
A substantially V-shaped slot indicated at 3 is formed within the body portion 5, and is disposed in the upper surface of the body portion, the V-shaped slot 9 being disposed at an acute angle with respect to the upper surface of the body portion, as shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing. This slot 9 is designed to receive the wedge block It which is tapered to fit within the V-shaped slot. One end of the sanding strip is positioned in the V-shape-d slot, and the wedge block H] is forced into the slot where it frictionally engages the sanding strip, setting up a binding action between the sanding strip and wedge block to securel hold the sanding strip taut.
Thus it will be seen that due to this construction, the sanding strip may be readily and easily removed and replaced when it becomes worn, and that because of the length of the sanding strip, it may be readily reversed when the sanding strip begins to show wear. By reversing, is meant that the end of the sanding strip positioned in the slot 8 will be removed and positioned in the wedgeshaped slot 9, while the end of the sanding strip normally positioned in the wedge-shaped slot 9, will be extended into the slot 8. With this change of positioning, the unused portion of the sanding strip will be presented for sanding purposes.
The knob indicated at H is formed on the upper surface of the body portion, adjacent to one end thereof, and this knob provides an enlargement on which the operators hand may rest in directing pressure to the body portion, during the sanding operation. a
In order that the body portion may be conveniently gripped, the upper edge of the wedge block I9 is slightly beveled and rounded, as at l2 to better fit the palm of the hand of the person using the device. Grooves l3 are also formed in the longitudinal side surfaces of the body portion, to receive the fingers of the hand gripping the body portion.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a hand sander which will be exceptionally handy in sanding surfaces, and one wherein the sanding strip may be readily and easily removed, without the use of clamping screws or the like.
What is claimed is:
1. A hand sander comprising a body portion having a slot formed in one end thereof, said slot adapted to accommodate one end of a sanding strip, said body portion having a slot in the upper surface thereof in which the opposite end of the sanding strip is positioned, the intermediate portion of the sanding strip being stretched over the lower surface of the body portion, a wedge-shaped block adapted to be fitted in the slot formed in the upper surface of the body portion in contact with the sanding strip, securing the sanding strip to the body portion, and said wedge-shaped block having a rounded upper end spaced from the upper surface of the body portion, adapted to fit the curvature of ,the hand gripping the body portion 1 during the sanding operation.
2. A hand sander comprising a body portion having a slot formed in one end thereof, said slot adapted to accommodate one end of a sanding strip, said body portion having a slot in the upper surface thereof in which the opposite end of the sanding strip is positioned, the intermediate portion of the sanding strip being stretched over the lower surface of the body portion, a wedge-shaped block adapted to be fitted in the slot formed in the upper surface of the body portion in contact with the sanding'strip, securing the sanding strip to the body portion, and said wedge-shaped block having a rounded, beveled outer end spaced from the upper surface of the body portion, providing a rest for the hand gripping the body portion during the sanding operation. .1
