Abstract
Aldehydes and ketones are produced by reacting an olefine containing at least 3 carbon atoms with oxygen or a gas containing oxygen in a neutral to acid medium in the presence of water and a catalyst comprising a salt of palladium, iridium, ruthenium, rhodium or platinum and a redox system, the salt being present in an amount of more than 0.25 mol per litre of catalyst. The redox system preferably comprises a compound, advantageously the halide, of a metal that is capable of exhibiting different valencies under the reaction conditions, e.g. copper or iron. When the process is carried out continuously a compound yielding anions, e.g. hydrogen chloride, is advantageously added during the course of the reaction. The process may be carried out at a temperature of 20-200 DEG C. Examples are given of the conversion of (a) propylene to propionaldehyde and acetone, and (b) butene-1 to butyraldehyde and methylethyl ketone. Specification 938,834 also is referred to.
