Abstract

938,549. Cabinets etc.; furniture joints. R. M. DEMEUBOURG. April 20, 1961, No. 14316/61. Classes 52 (1) and 52 (2). A set of shelves is formed by a series of units B, C, D, E, F comprising two transverse end wall members 6 and two longitudinal half shelf members 8, 9, the member 8 being fixed to the rear upper edge of the member 6 and extending half way along, the member 9 being fixed to the front lower edge of the members 6 and being half the width of the member 6 immediately below so that when two units are placed one on top of another the adjacent members 8, 9 form a continuous single shelf; a suitable base A with a member 4 co-operates with member 9 of unit B to form the lowermost shelf, and a member 10 co-operates with member 8 of unit F to complete the set. The units may be of the same size or stepped back as shown. The units are joined by a tube 13 let into the underside of the member 9 acting as a female member and a smaller tube 5 let into the members 6 to form a male member, a screw 19 extending through the tube 5 to spread the split end 18 to fit the female member 13. Each unit may be held together by screws engaging both the members 8 or 9 and 6 or by screws 38a which engage pieces 42 which in turn are screwed into one of the members: tongues 40 may also be used to fit into slots 41. Right angle corners and T joints on the base unit may be held together by corner pieces 33 and screws or by connecting tongues 35. A back panel may be held in a recessed groove around the rear of the shelf space by pivoted tongues or in slides extending around the rear of the shelf space. Various interior fittings allow the units to have hinged doors, sliding doors, hinged-sliding doors, drawers, writing-table surface with a detachable shelf, writing-desk, bar-cabinet, compartments to accommodate gramophone records of various sizes &c.
