Abstract
Vitreous surfaces are siliconized by coating them with a composition containing organosilyl esters of the general formula R4-nSi(OOCR1)n, where R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, R1 is a saturated hydrocarbon radical, and n is 2 or 3, and causing polymerization of silicone on the surface by exposing it to moist air, which may be at ambient temperature. The composition may comprise a mixture of organosilyl di- and tri-esters, and other organosilicon derivatives, having a higher rate of hydrolysis, e.g. organohalogenosiloxanes may be included. The compositions may be applied as a vapour, an aerosol or a solution in an inert solvent. In examples, methylsilylacetic esters are prepared by reacting a mixture of methyltrichlorosilane and methyldichlorosilane with glacial acetic acid, in the presence of a trace of water, or with acetic anhydride, and applied in the form of an aerosol to glass insulators, which are then exposed to ambient air at 18 DEG C. and 70% relative humidity.
