Abstract

[Also in Groups XXX and XXXII] The bottom gate 14 (Fig. 3) of a skip or hopper is opened and closed by a rack-and-pinion mechanism, the rack comprising a series of rollers. In the form illustrated the rack is formed by two portions of chain 18 mounted on portions 16 (Fig. 2) of the door 14 outside the side wall 12 of the skip and engaged by pinions 30 operated by a hand wheel 34 to turn the gate 14 about stub axles 25. L-section members 15 reinforce the gate. A pawl-and-ratchet may be provided to hold the gate 14 open. The invention may be applied to stationary hoppers, to skips mounted on vehicles, or to skips for lifting and lowering material.
