Abstract
936,602. Extruding. SCHLOEMANN A.G. Oct. 26, 1961 [Nov. 18, 1960], No. 38328/61. Class 83 (4). A tube extrusion press has means for releasing and withdrawing the mandrel 8 and for inserting and securing therein a fresh mandrel. The mandrel 8 is secured to its holder 6 by a sleeve 7 which may include a bayonet joint. For changing the mandrel a double-acting cylinder 12 first raises a slide arm 11 which is then moved inwardly towards the press axis by a doubleacting cylinder 13. Fluid-actuated gripper jaws 16 carried by the arm then clamp the mandrel whilst a spanner 14 is rotated by a motor 15 to release the mandrel. Cylinders 12, 13 are then reversed to withdraw the mandrel and move it outwardly to a rotary carrier 19 which transfers it to an inspection and treating station 20. Fresh mandrels are collected by a further carrier 19a which supplies them to a second pair of gripping jaws and spanner on another arm 11. This is moved inwardly and upwardly to insert the new mandrel into sleeve 7, and secure it therein. The removal and insertion of the mandrels may take place automatically by electrical, hydraulic or mechanical control means initiated by retraction of the mandrel after each or every second and third extrusion strokes. Hand control may also be used. The arms 11 may be pivoted instead of slidable or a single arm may be used for both the removal and insertion operations.
