Abstract

1,014,187. Coating apparatus; work-holders. POLYTYPE A.G. Feb. 19, 1963 [March 9, 1962], No. 6603/63. Heading B2B. [Also in Division B6] An expansible mandrel, suitable for gripping and holding hollow-ware 6 during lacquering thereof, comprises a plurality of jaws 5 each attached to a leaf spring 4 fixed to a sleeve 7 mounted in an axially shiftable bush 8 inserted in a mandrel sleeve 9, an adapter ring 10 and a screw collar 11 which connect the sleeve 9 to a mandrel holder 3, a plug 12 and an extension pin 13 which fit in axially aligned bores in the bush 8 and the holder 3, an ejector ring 17 carried by the sleeve 7, fitted with a sealing collar 18 and axially co-operating with a compression spring 19, and a sealing ring 21 held in place by a threaded cap 22 and located between a shoulder 20 of the ejector ring and the sleeve 9. The extension pin 13 and the ring 10 may be replaced by similar members of alternative sizes. Compressed air may be passed through a bore in the pin 13 if the hollowware 6 is formed of a yieldable material; the collar 18 and the ring 21 prevent the loss of air pressure. In operation a plunger, not shown, forces the pin 13, bush 8 and plug 12 towards the mouth of the ware 6. The tapered head 23 of the plug 12 is therefore moved allowing the jaws 5 to contract and the mouth of the ware to be pushed by hand or other feed means against the collar 18. When the plunger is removed the jaws grip the ware inside its mouth under spring action and an indexing plate, Fig. 1 (not shown) presents the ware at a printing station. The base of the ware is held by a support during lacquering.
