Abstract
936,136. Valves. A. LINS. Jan. 18, 1960 [Jan. 19, 1959; Jan. 7, 1960], No. 1738/60. Class 135. An electrically controlled thermally-actuated valve comprises a chamber 8 divided into two compartments by a flexible diaphragm 9, the upper compartment containing a volatile liquid and an electrical resistance heater 11. The lower compartment contains an incompressible liquid which communicates with a cylinder 4, housing a piston 5, through a perforated plate 7. A valve spindle 15 is urged towards the piston 5 by a spring 17 and a lever 20 pivoted at 21 may be provided between the spindle and piston to lock the spindle in an appropriate position by notches 25 in a groove 24 of the housing 23. In operation a current is supplied to the heater 11 causing the volatile liquid to vaporize and create a pressure which acts on the diaphragm 9 and through the incompressible liquid to move the piston 5 downwards against the spring loading 17. Such movement of the piston 5 and hence the spindle 15 continues until the amount of heat supplied by the resistance 11 is equal to the amount of heat dissipated by the walls of the chamber 8. To ensure efficient cooling of the walls of the chamber 8 by the surrounding air, openings 23a may be provided in the housing 23. In the embodiment described the movable valve member 27 attached to the spindle 15 controls the flow of water from a return pipe 29 of a hot water heating system to two outlet pipes 30, 31, the pipe 30 leading to the boiler while the pipe 31 leads to the outlet from the boiler. An adjustable temperature feeler is provided to regulate the current supplied to the resistance 11, thus controlling the temperature of the system. In a modification the resistance 11 is housed in a pocket of chamber 8 extending into the volatile liquid space so that the heater may be removed for repair or replacement without opening the space. The pocket is preferably arranged so as to be in contact with the liquid component of the volatile liquid at least in the major portion of the entire temperature range.
