Abstract
1410009 Burner controller T I DOMESTIC APPLIANCES Ltd 30 Oct 1972 [4 Nov 1971] 51423/71 Heading F4T A burner controller comprises a heat-resistant member 1, Fig. 1, to be directly heated by a flame so that the member 1 will expand and contract along a generally rectilinear axis, one portion of member 1 being secured to a mount 2, 3, 4 relative to which another portion of member 1 will move or the member 1 is heated or cooled, a main valve for controlling fuel flow to a burner and having a fuel inlet 10 and outlet 15, a chamber 17 having a diaphragm 12 or one wall thereof, and a main valve member 13 connected to and movable with the diaphragm 12, there being a path 20 for restricted fuel flow from inlet 10 to chamber 17, and a pilot valve connected to chamber 17 and having a fixed valve member 5 fixed to the mount and a movable valve member 6 operated by member 1 and movable therewith relative to member 5 on thermal expansion or contraction of the member 1 so that when the pilot valve is open the restricted fuel flow flows from the fuel inlet 10 to and through chamber 17 and thence to and through the pilot valve, thereby controlling opening and closing of the main valve. The member 1 may be a straight rod, wire or tube having a cylindrical outer surface or may be of thin thickness material. The mount may be in the form of a frame of a material, such as a ceramic or a steel, of low expansion coefficient, or of a material of significantly different expansion coefficient to member 1. One end of member 1 carrier, the valve member 6 which is biased by a spring 6<SP>1</SP> against a seat 5. Heating of member 1 opens the pilot valve thereby relieving pressure in chamber 17 whereby the main valve opens, the restricted fuel flow passing through an aperture 20 in diaphragm to burn at a port 7 of the pilot valve. An oven burner 38 Fig. 4, is supplied via such a main valve 41 controlled by a pilot valve and expandible flame sensor 44 or described above, sensor 44 being heated by a burner 42 ignited by a permament pilot 45. Gas flow to burner 38, 42 is controlled by a combined tap and thermostat 40 supplied by a governor 39. A clock-controlled valve 43 may be included in the fuel line to burner 42. The oven burner may be as described in Specification 1,359,994.
