Abstract
Polymers are prepared by reacting: (a) or <FORM:0935740/IV(a)/1> <FORM:0935740/IV(a)/2> where X is O or NH, A is N or CH, R is H or CH3, and Y1 is an unsaturated group containing a direct chain of at least three carbon atoms with a single ethylenic double bond in the chain, with (b) <FORM:0935740/IV(a)/3> where R1 and R2 are each an alkyl or aryl group and M is Si or Sn, and (c) one or more further compounds of the formula given in (b) or one or more compounds of the formula: <FORM:0935740/IV(a)/4> where R3 and R4 are each alkyl or aryl, M is Si or Sn, and Alk is an alkenyl group such as a vinyl or allyl group, the molar proportions of reactants having hydrogen atoms directly linked to M and of reactants containing ethylenic double bonds in the groups Y1 and Alk being approximately equal. Catalysts for the polymerization of ethenoid compounds, such as organic peroxides or azo-compounds, e.g. azo bis-isobutyronitrile, and/or ultra-violet radiation. When silicon compounds are used as (b) or (c), elements of Group VIII or their compounds, e.g. platinum charcoal, nickel or hydrochloroplatinic acid. Heating under pressure, e.g. in a sealed tube, is often desirable and non-oxidizing conditions, e.g. a nitrogen atmosphere, are preferred. Many examples are given.
