Abstract

Polymers with a repeating unit SiH2-NR-, in which R is an alkyl group with not more than 5 carbon atoms or an aryl group with not more than 7 carbon atoms are prepared (a) by reacting 1 mol of silylene iodide with 3 to 3.05 mols of primary amine at a reduced temperature and in presence of a non-coordinating inert solvent for the reactants, or (b) by reacting substantially equimolecular amounts of a bis-(dialkylamine) silane with a primary amine at normal or raised temperature, or (c) by subjecting an alkyldisilylamine vapour to ultra-violet radiation, or to pyrolysis at 400-600 DEG C. Polymers with terminal silyl groups may be further polymerized by ultra-violet radiation. In Examples (1) methylamine is reacted with silylene iodide in n-hexane at low temperature. Traces of iodine may be removed from the polymer produced by treatment with dimethylamine. Aniline or n-butylamine may be used in place of methylamine; (2) bis-(dimethylamino)-silane is reacted with methylamine, or n-butylamine; (3) methyldisilylamine was irradiated with ultra-violet light; (4) methyldisilylamine was pyrolized to produce a liquid mixture of polymers.
