Abstract

935,044. Adjustable chairs. MINISTER OF WORKS. July 20, 1962 [July 21, 1961], No. 26491/61. Class 52 (2). A chair or stool has a seat 14 which when unloaded is vertically adjustable by rotating a screw-threaded spindle 8 in a bush 4 which is mounted in a pedestal 1. When loaded the seat 14, which is attached to a cap 13 and secured to the top of the spindle 8 by a pin 15, presses down on a helical spring 12 so that the pin 15 moves down a vertical slot in the top of the spindle 8 and registers with an annular slot 10, whereby the seat can be rotated about the spindle. The load applied to the seat is also transmitted by the spindle 8 to the bush 4 which is thrust against the tapered face of a smaller bored part 3 of the pedestal 1. The bush has vertical slots 7 and can therefore be forced inwardly to grip the spindle and prevent relative rotation between the spindle and bush.
