Abstract

A process for hydrofining a hydrocarbon liquid over a hydrofining catalyst at a pressure above 100 p.s.i.g. and a temperature in the range of 200 DEG -700 DEG F., comprises first saturating the liquid with hydrogen in a hydrogen saturation zone, then flowing the liquid, in the absence of gaseous hydrogen, through a reaction zone containing a bed of the catalyst, wherein the liquid phase occupies more than 95% of the available free volume of the bed below the liquid level therein, and recovering a hydrofined may be 400-2000 p.s.i.g., employing a downflow operation in the reaction zone. The feed may be a distillate boiling in the range 450 DEG -850 DEG F., capable of absorbing more than 25 SCF/B H2 at 800 p.s.i.g. and 550 DEG F. Preferably the liquid leaving the hydrogen saturation zone contains more than 25 SCF/B H2, of which less than 10 SCF are consumed, the excess being separated from the product and recycled to the saturation zone. A cobalt-molybdenum oxide on alumina catalyst, containing iron and silica, and presulphided, may be employed.
