Abstract

934,309. Chisels &c. WARD & PAYNE Ltd. June 27, 1962 [Dec. 2, 1961], No. 43198/61. Class 61. A joiners' chisel or gouge comprises a blade and shank of composite construction, a length of high-speed steel to provide the cutting edge being integrally secured to the end of a length of tough steel to complete the length of blade and shank. The high-speed steel may contain tungsten in the range 14 to 22%, 18% being preferred. As shown in Fig. 1, the machined end faces of a high-speed steel portion 7 and of a toolsteel blade portion 1 are brought together and united by butt-welding as indicated at 12. Gaswelding or brazing may alternatively be used. The invention may also be applied to firmer chisels, to chisels with pointed tangs and bolsters and to socketed chisels. In a modification, Fig. 8, the rib 19 of a tool-steel blade portion 1X is fitted in a slot 20 of a high-speed steel end portion 7X and the portions 1X, 7X united by arc-welding as indicated at 12X.
