Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises essentially a blend of- (1) an ester mixture formed as the result of esterification of:- (a) an aliphatic monohydric alcohol having 8 to 13 carbon atoms or a mixture of such alcohols, (b) an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid having 6 to 10 carbon atoms or a mixture of such acids, and (c) one or more of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, neopentyl glycol and polyethylene glycols having a molecular weight up to 500, and (2) a substantially water-insoluble polyoxyalkylene glycol ether of the formula RO(R1O)nH where R is an alkyl group of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, R1 is an ethylene or propylene group, and n is an integer or a mixture of such ethers, the viscosity of the ether component being greater than that of the ester component and between 5 and 60 centistokes at 210 DEG F., and the relative proportions of ether and ester being such that the blend has a viscosity of 3 to 15 centistokes at 210 DEG F. The compositions may also contain phenothiazine, phenyl-a -naphthylamine, p,p1-dioctyldiphenylamine or 2:4-dimethyl-6-tert-butylphenol.
