Abstract

<PICT:0932668/III/1> A vitrious quartz tube 1 and a silicon or germanium rod 3 contained therein are passed downwards through an induction heating coil 6 which forms a molten zone 5 in the rod 3 and the molten zone is observed with the aid of an infra-red image converter 8. The zone-melting process may be controlled by adjusting the strength of the current in the induction heating coil 6. The solid portions of the rod 3 may be observed if they are irradiated with infra-red light which may be in the form of daylight.
