Abstract

<PICT:0932403/IV(a)/1> Fabrics are shrunk or relaxed by immersing the fabric at full width, while unsupported and under conditions allowing it to shrink, in a hot aqueous liquid and subsequently removing the fabric from the liquid supported on a conveyer belt which dips below the surface of the liquid. The process is applicable to any fabrics comprised of fibres possessing potential shrinkage or which can be relaxed by hot aqueous treatment, e.g. polyacrylonitrile, polyolefines or copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate. The hot aqueous liquid may be hot water containing a soap or wetting agent, or containing other additives such as a dye. The temperature of the liquid must be sufficient to cause relaxation, e.g. for polyacrylonitrile, above 75 DEG C. In the described embodiment a fabric 1 is fed by rollers 2 on to stainless steel shoot 3, down which it slides into bath 4, containing liquid. The fabric flows along the surface of the liquid, assisted by paddles 5, and is removed from the bath by conveyer 6. Cooling is assisted by cold water spray 7. Final cooling takes place in cold water bath 8, from which the fabric is withdrawn by rollers 9. In an example, a polyacrylonitrile fabric is relaxed, as above, in water at 90 DEG C. containing 1% of wetting agent.ALSO:<FORM:0932403/IV(a)/1> Fabrics are shrunk or relaxed by treatment with hot aqueous liquid in the manner shown. Fabric 1 is fed by rollers 2 on to a stainless steel shoot 3, down which it slides into a bath 4, containing hot aqueous liquid, e.g. water at 90 DEG C. containing 1% of wetting agent. The fabric flows along the surface of the liquid, its movement being assisted by paddles 5. The fabric is led from the bath by means of conveyer belt 6, the leading edge of which dips below the surface of the liquid in bath 4. Cooling of the fabric on the belt is assisted by cold water from jet 7. Final cooling is carried out in cold water bath 8 from which the fabric is withdrawn by rollers 9.
