Abstract

930,851. Hydromechanical variable-speed gear. DAIMLER CO. Ltd. April 25, 1960 [April 24, 1959], No. 14055/59. Class 80 (2). In an hydromechanical split-torque transmission an hydraulic coupling 1, 3 is combined with a three-element epicyclic gear comprising an annulus 7, sun 13 and planets 9, and a centrifugal friction clutch 19 so that as the speed increases the coupling slip decreases and a larger proportion of the torque is thereby transmitted directly to the gear output shaft. As shown the outer portion of the coupling runner 3 is connected to the annulus 7 through the clutch 19, and the hub portion is connected directly to the sun-wheel 13. Clutch 19 is actuated by centrifugal masses 39 on spindles 37 passing through the annulus 7, each spindle carrying a sector with teeth 35 meshing with internal teeth 33 on the pressure plate 27, which is moved axially by balls 29 located in conical recesses in the pressure plate 27 and the coupling easing 5, such movement being assisted, if desired, by forming teeth 33, 35 helically. At a predetermined speed clutch 19 is effective to lock the planetary gear for direct drive to output shaft 11. Annulus 7 may have twice the number of teeth of sunwheel 13, so that the hydraulic coupling or the clutch, when engaged, carries about one-third of the total torque transmitted.
