Abstract

929,915. Heat-treating wire. VAUGHN MACHINERY CO. Sept. 19, 1961 [May 19, 1961], No. 33664/61. Class 72. [Also in Group XII] Apparatus for the continuous patenting of steel wire contains a stationary hollow cylindrical take-up block with a tapered push flange at one end, and bars extending coaxially from the periphery of the cylinder at the other, winding means to advance loops of wire along the block and bars, a furnace surrounding part of the resultant coil, with an insulating sleeve inside the coil extending from the block to the end of the furnace, and means for supplying cool air to the flange end of the block, and passing it through the block and the insulating sleeve on to the coil after it leaves the furnace. As shown, the wire 1 is uncoiled, passed through a scale-breaker 5, a die-box 6 and pinch rolls 9 before passing through a housing 12 and a furnace 29 before being finally recoiled. The housing 12 contains a hollow rotating shaft 13 carrying a flyer arm 19 whereby the wire is coiled on to the take-up block 21. The take-up block is kept stationary by a portion 23 projecting from the shaft 13 and carrying a rotatable shaft with sun-and-planet gearing 24-27, disclosed in Specifications 906,785 and 918,748, of which the sun gear 27 is attached to the block. The block may also be held stationary by weighting the bottom of a horn formed at the ends of the bars 28. The furnace 29 fired by gas burners 30 heats the coil to a temperature above 1750‹ F., and the heating time is controlled either by the rate of winding or the length of the furnace. A spider-shaped support plate 33, which allows the passage of cooling air is attached to the bars 28 and rotatably supported by the end of shaft 13. The cooling air, supplied by a fan 10 passes through the casing 12 and the insulating sleeve 31 extending through the furnace and cools the coiled wire with the help of the ambient air.
