Abstract
929,386. Making composite tubes; jointing by tube expanding; flanging. L. CAZZANIGA. Dec. 19, 1961, No. 45505/61. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A device for making composite tubes consisting of an inner tube which is expanded by hydraulic pressure into engagement with the inside surface of a surrounding outer tube comprises a chamber 1 in which the tubes are placed, a first end header 12 for adjustably housing a tapered hollow cylinder 11, the interior of which can be vented to the atmosphere, said cylinder engaging in one end of the inner tube 10, a second end header 3 in which is slidably housed inside a chamber 4, a second tapered hollow cylinder 7 which engages in the other end of the inner tube 10 said second cylinder being in permanent communication with a source of hydraulic pressure P. The inner tube may be of steel and the outer tube may have cast iron fins 2<SP>1</SP> and end flanges 2. In operation, after the tube assembly has been positioned and clamped in the chamber 1 fluid pressure is applied from the pump P and the valve 14 is held open until all air is expelled. As the fluid pressure rises the tube 10 shortens as it expands and the end flanges and outer tube follow this movement. The cylinder 7 also follows the tube 10 due to the hydraulic pressure acting on its end face and thus fluid-tight contact with the tube is retained. In a modification the second header includes ball valves 23, Fig. 2, for admitting low pressure fluid through a passage 25 for filling the apparatus with water and at the same time exhausting the air. High pressure fluid is introduced through inlet 26 to effect the jointing operation.
