Abstract
1,121,888. Stamping. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 6 March, 1967 [30 March, 1966], No. 14108/66. Heading B3Q. [Also in Division B5] Objects of sheet metal are shaped by placing the sheet against the shaped wall of a mould, the wall being inflexible but having insufficient strength to withstand the full fluid pressure across it, evacuating air from the space between the sheet and the mould and immersing the assembly in a fluid under high pressure which presses the sheet against the wall and also supports the mould wall. As shown the metal 9<SP>1</SP> is in the form of a cup and is clamped against the shaped mould 10<SP>1</SP> by clamp 13<SP>1</SP>, sealing being accomplished by O-ring 12<SP>1</SP>. Air is evacuated from the space between the sheet 9<SP>1</SP> and the mould 10<SP>1</SP> through tube 16<SP>1</SP>, the valve 17<SP>1</SP> is then closed and the assembly immersed in a bath of fluid under pressure. The shaped object can be removed from the mould after pressing as it tends to separate slightly from the mould sides as the pressure is released. The sheet metal may also take the form of a frustum of a hollow cone clamped at both ends or may be covered on the side away from the mould face by a flexible membrane.
