Abstract

929,081. Hollow rollers. R. KAUSCHKA. Aug. 26, 1960 [Aug. 26, 1959], No. 29597/60. Class 34 (1). [Also in Group XXIV] A hollow printing roller is mounted on a spindle having at least two ducts opening into the peripheral surface of the spindle at spaced points along its length, which ducts communicate with a bore or bores, respectively, in the spindle whereby fluid under pressure can be introduced through the ducts to the surface of the spindle and having a conically-shaped portion on each side of each duct opening which diverges away from the opening, the spindle including a pair of expanding rings mounted thereon between each pair of oppositely directed conical portions associated with each duct opening, the rings being axially displaceable on the spindle and having internal conical surfaces of the same conicity as the conical portions of the spindle and external surfaces corresponding in shape to the internal surface of the printing roller and sealing means between each pair of expanding rings for defining a sealed chamber in the annular space between the spindle and the roller so that the fluid under pressure introduced thereinto through the associated duct will serve to move the rings apart to clamp the spindle and roller against relative movement. A printing roller 15 is clamped on to a spindle 1 to prevent relative movement therebetween by passing a fluid under pressure through an axial bore 2 of the spindle and a radial duct 3 which opens on to the peripheral surface of the spindle. Clamping means between the spindle and roller on both sides of the duct comprise expanding rings 5, 6 having an internal conical surface corresponding in conicity to the cones 7, 8 on the spindle, of which the cone 7 is removable to enable a bush 9, slidable rings 10, 11, sealing rings 12, 13 as well as the rings 5, 6 to be mounted on the spindle. The fluid under pressure passes through the duet into a chamber 14 bounded by the bush 9 and sealing rings 12, 13 which are thereby displaced from the duct 3 entraining the rings 10, 11 and thus displacing the rings 5, 6 in the same direction to lock the roller 15 with respect to the spindle. At least two such clamping means are spaced along the length of the spindle which may be served by a single or separate bores.
