Abstract
944,005. Spinning. CINCINNATI MILLING MACHINE CO. Oct. 11, 1962 [Nov. 6, 1961], No. 38521/62. Heading B3J. A method of spinning a flat metal blank over a mandrel by a pair of tool rings engaging with the blank as they move along the mandrel to form in a single continuous operation a part having a conical section followed by a cylindrical section comprises, rotating the mandrel and the blank as a unit relative to the tool rings, moving one of the tool rings along the mandrel with a predetermined spacing between the ring and the mandrel which is approximately equal to the original thickness of the blank to press the blank against the mandrel without any significant reduction in thickness thereof, and simultaneously moving the other tool ring a preselected distance behind said first mentioned tool ring to thereby spin the blank to its final thickness, shape and size. A blank 14 is held and centrally positioned by a clamping element 16 against the end of a mandrel 12 and spun into shape about the mandrel by a pair of tool rings 20, 22. The leading ring 20 is positioned <SP>3</SP>/ 16 to <SP>5</SP>/ 16 inches in advance of the trailing ring 22 and serves to form the blank over the mandrel whilst the ring 22 reduces the blank to the required thickness. The spacing of the ring 20 from the mandrel may be 0.010 inch less than the blank thickness on the conical portion and 0.060 in. greater on the cylindrical portion. The rings 20, 22 are supported on cross slides of a machine and their working paths controlled by a tracer mechanism (not shown). Specifications 805,182 and 889,077 are referred to.
