Abstract

A free flowing powder mixture comprising by weight 83%-95.4% of tungsten, chromium, chromium carbide or molybdenum disilicide, 2%-8% of a water soluble polymerized synthetic gum, 2%-5% water and 0.1%-2% of a water insoluble stearate is compacted to a green density of 30%-65% theoretical and a green strength of 5-500 p.s.i. then cold rolled to at least 80% reduction in thickness and finally sintered in an inert atmosphere such as hydrogen. The gum specified is polyacrylamide, the stearate is diglycol stearate and 0.1% to 0.2% of a dispensing agent such as lignin sulphonate may also be present. The metal, carbide or disilicide powder should have a particle size of 1.5 to 10 micron and the compaction is effected by extrusion at 50 DEG C.-60 DEG C. After cold rolling the compact may be shaped as desired, the tungsten being sintered at 1700 DEG C., the chromium at 1500 DEG C. and the molybdenum disilicide at 1650 DEG C.
