Abstract
Iron/manganese tungstate ores, i.e. ferberite wolframite, and huebnerite are digested with aqueous hydrochloric acid, and molybdenum values extracted with methyl isobutyl ketone. The methyl isobutyl ketone may be present during the digestion step or may be added subsequently. The process also purifies tungsten ores from other specified metal values in addition to molybdenum values. In the Example a ground tungsten ore was digested with 12M hydrochloric acid in the presence of methyl isobutyl ketone, at 80 DEG to 82 DEG C., the mixture filtered and the tungstic acid in the solid residue dissolved in aqueous ammonia. The resulting solution was evaporated to produce crystalline ammonium paratungstate.
