Abstract
925,416. Heat insulation for liquefied gas containers. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. May 24, 1960 [July 2, 1959], No. 18353/60. Class 8(2). A method of producing a heat-insulating structure for insulating liquid gas vessels comprises inserting a composite insulation 112 consisting of alternate layers of low-conductive fibrous material 113 and heat reflective foils 114 preferably perforated to assist in the evacuation of residual gases from the space formed between a cold wall 110a and an outer wall 110b and thereafter sealing and evacuating the space containing the insulating structure, the latter process being facilitated by a low flow resistance channel 116 formed between the outermost foil 113a and the outer wall 110b. The individual fibres of the fibrous material 113 are arranged substantially parallel to the foils 114 within the space between the cold wall 110a and the outer wall 110b. The separate fibres composing the fibrous layers 113 have a diameter of 0À2-5 microns and a sufficient number of heat reflective foils, each of which has a thickness of 0À002-0À2 mm. and an emissivity of 0À005-0À2, to provide for 5-50 foils per inch of thickness of the installed insulation, is installed in the wall space under elastic compression sufficient to provide an installed density of the fibrous layers of not less than 0À5 lbs. per cu. ft. whereupon the space between the walls 110a and 110b is evacuated to a pressure of less than 5 microns of mercury.
