[Also in Group XX] A sample of coal, or other material whose specific gravity is to be determined, is placed in a sample holder 30 supported within, but not touching, a container 29 partly filled with liquid, such as water, by means of a rod 31 and strain gauge 33, the container 29 being supported by lever 27, pivoted at 26, and strain gauge 28. The gauges 28, 33 form the ratio arms of a self-balancing Wheatstone bridge arranged so that the setting obtained when balance is reached is a direct reading of the specific gravity of the sample.
