925,268. Bearings. A. P. PEDRICK. July 3, 1961, No. 23930/61. Class 12 (1). [Also in Group XXXI] A fluid bearing for a vehicle &c. has a spherical member A, of hard rubber or of synthetic plastics material, which is freely received by a spherical-shaped socket in a housing B of the vehicle and is in contact with the ground. When the vehicle is stationary, the housing B is supported by the spherical member A and when the vehicle is moving, pressurized air is supplied from a pipe C to provide a clearance between the member A and the housing B. The pressure of the air is adjusted according to the load carried by the vehicle so as to give the required clearance between the member A and the housing B. The vehicle may be tilted by pressurized air which enters a chamber D and expands a bellows E to raise a floor K. In an embodiment, two or more bearings are positioned at each side of a vehicle to support the main load. A single steering wheel is provided at the front end of the vehicle and closely-spaced driving wheels are at the rear which may form part of a disconnectable engine unit. The fluid bearings facilitate turning of the vehicle and air storage reservoirs are charged by an air compressor driven by the engine. When pressurized air is cut off the spherical members A are braked by making contact with the housing.
