Abstract
924,868. Domed building structures; lattice building frameworks. KAISER ALUMINUM & CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Feb. 15, 1960 [Feb. 20, 1959], No. 5342/60. Addition to 836,466. Classes 20 (2) and 20 (4). A shell-like building structure such as a geodesic dome, comprising a plurality of structural units 7, Fig. 4, of the kind described and claimed in the parent Specification, is reinforced by a framework interconnected with the shell structure, which framework includes a plurality of frame elements 2, 3, the elements 2 being arranged in the form of regular polygons which are disposed in spaced relation to the polygons formed by the strut members 12 of the structural units 7. The frame elements 3 extend from the corners of the polygons defined by the elements 2 and converge in groups to the common vertices of the sets of units 7, the struts 12 of which define regular polygons. The framework may be provided either externally or internally of the shell structure. Sixway tubular connectors 4 are provided at the junctions of the members 2 and 3. At the junctions of the elements 3 where they are secured to the units 7, the ends of the elements 3 are bolted to rosette-like connectors 30 which are of similar configuration to rosette-like connectors 20 (see the parent Specification) which connect common vertices of the units 7. Bolts 32 pass through aligned central holes in opposed pairs of connectors 20, 30. In an arrangement having the reinforcing framework internally of the shell, the elements 2 are replaced by ladderlike elements 62, Fig. 9, which form walkways. The elements 62, and the elements 63 replace the elements 3, are welded at their converging ends to shaped connectors 65, 78, which are welded together. The other ends of the elements 63 are welded to shaped connectors 82, Fig. 11, which are bolted to opposed rosette-like connectors 20 serving to secure the units 7 at their common vertices.
