Abstract
The invention comprises A-nor-cholest-3(5)-ene-1,2-dione, 11b ,17a ,21- trihydroxy-A-nor-pregn-3(5)-ene-1,2,20-trione and the 21-acetate thereof, and 17b -hydroxy-A-nor-androst-3(5)-ene-1,2-dione and the 17-propionate thereof, and a process for the preparation of A-nor-steroids having the following partial formula at ring A <FORM:0924588/IV(a)/1> by treating steroids having the following partial formula at ring A <FORM:0924588/IV(a)/2> wherein R represents <FORM:0924588/IV(a)/3> or an oxo radical when the 4(5) double bond is present, and wherein R represents an oxo radical when the 4(5) bond is saturated, with manganese dioxide. The steroid reactant may contain substituents in other positions such as an 11- or 17-hydroxy radical or a 17-branched chain radical. 1-#x,2#x- Dihydroxycholest- 4-en- 3-one, 1#x,2#x,11b ,17a -tetrahydroxy- 21-acetoxy-pregn-4-ene- 3,20-dione, and 1#x,2#x-dihydroxy-17b -propionyloxy-androst-4-en-3-one are prepared by treating cholesta-1,4-diene-3-one, prednisolone acetate and D 1-dehydrotestosterone propionate respectively with osmium tetroxide in pyridine.
