Abstract

A chewable lump or piece comprises a perforated envelope of rubber, or other resilient material permeable to saliva, enclosing one or more saliva-soluble substances, e.g. sweeteners such as saccharin, flavourings such as vanillin, tobacco extracts, and/or pharmaceutical substances such as throat antiseptics, caffeine, coumarin. The substance may be in the form of particles dispersed in gelatine or other soluble jelly-like material, or an aqueous solution of the substance may be absorbed on a porous material, e.g. cotton lint or an ion-exchange resin (itself in granular form). In an example, tobacco extract absorbed on a sodium-form cation-exchange resin is encapsulated with one or more flavouring and/or sweetening substances, and a second resin capable of liberating free acids from saliva salts also incorporated, the latter acids assisting in the liberation of the tobacco alkaloids absorbed on the first resin. In a further form of the invention, the tobacco extract impregnated ion-exchange resin granules are mixed with gelatine and the mixture added to a rubber latex emulsion which is spread out, allowed to set and cut into mouth-size pieces which are then enclosed within the lumps or pieces of resilient material.
