Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the formulae <FORM:0923895/IV(a)/1> (wherein R and R1 are alkyl groups each containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms, R2 is hydrogen, acetyl or propionyl, R3 is acetyl or propionyl, and R4 is a propyl or isopropyl radical) and their preparation (1) by reacting the corresponding a -acyloxy- or a -hydroxy-carboxylic acids or reactive functional derivatives thereof with the appropriate amine, and, if desired, hydrolysing a resulting a -acyloxy-amide to the corresponding a -hydroxy-amide; or (2) by reacting a corresponding a -amino-carboxylic acid amide with nitrous acid; or (3) by reacting a corresponding a -oxo-carboxylic acid amide or an oxalic acid monoester the other carboxyl group of which is bound as the required acid amide group with an alkyl magnesium halide; or (4) by hydrolysing a compound of the formula <FORM:0923895/IV(a)/2> and if desired acylating the a -hydroxy group. Examples are given. a -Amino-a -ethyl-butyric acid tertiary butylamide is prepared from the corresponding a -bromo compound and ammonia. The amides of the invention, which are stated to have analeptic properties, may be formulated as pharmaceutical compositions in admixture with suitable carriers.
