Abstract

923,876. Restoring shape of articles; anvils. CHALMERS & CO. (AGRICULTURAL & MOTOR ENGINEERS) Ltd. Feb. 8, 1962 [Aug. 24, 1961], No. 30570/61. Class 83 (4). A device for removing dents from body panels comprises an elongate member having attached thereto a panel-gripping element and provided with a stop spaced apart from the gripping element, there being a weight slidably mounted therebetween on the elongate member. Referring to Fig. 2, a steel shaft 11 is threaded at both ends, thereby engaging an end stop 12 and a chuck 18; it also carries a rubber sleeve 14 and a hexagonal section steel striker 15. In operation, a hole is punched in a body panel in the region of a dent, a self-tapping screw 17 inserted in the chuck and then screwed into the punched hole. The dent is effectively hammered from its blind side by thrusting the weight 15 against the collar 14. Various grippers or supports may be screwed to the shaft instead of the chuck (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), which may for example be used for imparting a pull on a dented wing rim. The stop 12, which also forms a handle, may be firmly anchored to the rod 11 by riveting a protruding thread of the shaft over the end of the handle.
