Abstract
Unsaturated polyesters, melting at not less than 75 DEG C. and copolymerizable to give resins free from surface tackiness contain the residues of an aliphatic, olefinically unsaturated polycarboxylic acid (e.g. maleic or fumaric) and alicyclic diol residues of formula <FORM:0923691/IV(a)/1> in which m=0 or 1, n=0 or 1 and R1, R2, R3 and R4 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups containing not more than 4 carbon atoms. The polyesters may also contain the residues of a conventional glycol (e.g. ethylene-, diethyleneor 1:2-propylene-glycol) and a saturated dicarboxylic acid, (e.g. succinic, adipic, phthalic, isophthalic or terephthalic acid or a partially or completely hydrogenated derivative of phthalic, isophthalic or terephthalic acid). Coating compositions are made by dissolving the polyester in styrene, possibly together with a solubilising agent, (e.g. butylacetate or acetone) and adding a conventional polymerization catalyst. In an example, a polyester obtained by reacting cyclohexene-1:2-diol, 1:2-propylene glycol, maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride in the presence of hydroquinone was dissolved in styrene and methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and cobalt naphthenate were added to form a lacquer.
