Abstract

Thermoplastic modified epoxy resins are the reaction product of a polyepoxide containing at least two active oxirane rings and a free carboxyl group containing material which is a rosin and/or the esterification product of an organic compound containing at least two esterifiable hydroxyl groups and an organic acid containing 2 or 3 carboxyl groups, the reaction product being produced in the presence of a catalyst of the formula <FORM:1000502/C3/1> or <FORM:1000502/C3/2> where R1, R2, R3 and R4 are straight chain saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon and/or aryl groups and X is an anion which does not form an insoluble product with the cation A and R2, R3 and R4 may be hydroxyalkyl groups. Polyepoxides specified are glycidyl ethers of polyhydric phenols (including novolaks), the reaction products of bisphenol A and vinylcyclohexene dioxide, epoxidized vegetable oils and epoxidized fatty acids. The carboxyl group containing materials specified are pine rosin, abietic acid and/or polyesters derived from fumaric, maleic, itaconic, azelaic, phthalic, isophthalic, adipic and citric acids and glycerol, sorbitol, dipentaerythritol, tripentaerythritol, pentaerythritol and diethylene glycol. The reaction products are useful as modifiers for thermoplastic resins and may be formed in situ. Thermoplastic resins specified are plasticized and unplasticized polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers, vinylidene chloride, vinyl stearates with or without polyvinyl chlorides and homo- or co-polymerized styrene and acrylates. In the examples, the composition also contain a barium-cadmium soap.
