Abstract
The invention comprises 4,6-pregnadienes of the general formula <FORM:0923125/IV(a)/1> wherein R represents hydrogen or an acyl group, R1 represents a hydroxyl or keto group, and X represents hydrogen or a halogen atom, and the 16-methyl group is in the a - and b -position, and the preparation thereof by reacting the corresponding 4-pregnene compounds with chloranil in an organic solvent such as t-butanol, at an elevated temperature. The 11-hydroxy compounds of the above general formula may be oxidised to the corresponding 11-keto compounds, and 21-ester compounds of the above general formula may be hydrolysed to 21-hydroxy compounds. Ester groups present may be a 21-acetate, 21-propionate or 21-butyrate. The preferred halogen at the 9-position is fluorine. Specifications 877,085 and 906,443 are referred to.
