Abstract
A process of manufacturing high purity pulverized iron comprises nitriding thin iron scrap at high temperature in ammonia gas, pulverizing the nitrided steel to a desired particle size, and denitriding the pulverized material. Scrap of 0.5 mm. thickness may be nitrided at 750 DEG C. in an atmosphere of ammonia, cooled and pulverized to pass 100 mesh and heated to above 700 DEG C. in an oxygen-free atmosphere, e.g. waste gas from the nitriding process. The powdered product is stated to contain 99.5% Fe.
