A method of fixing long, tubular handle shanks to forged shanks of tongs, bush shears and the like, comprises preferably forming each tongs shank 4 and at least the end of the handle shank 5 co-operating with it into an elongated crosssection, slitting the tongs shank and providing it with a loosely fitting key 7, pressing the handle shank on to the tongs shank and driving the k y / into the slot 6 from the open end of the handle shank by means of a spike inserted through the handle to expand the tongs shank against the inner wall of the handle shank. The open ends of the handles 5 are finally closed by fitting rubber or plastic sleeves 8.
